In Malawi, MSF works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and local communities in projects including the Cervical Cancer project in Blantyre and Chiradzulu and the CBO project in Zalewa and Dedza.
Job Overview
The Biomed Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of biomedical equipment used in MSF-supported health facilities, ensuring all equipment is safe, functional, and compliant with MSF standards.
The Role
This is a fixed-term maternity cover position based at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, responsible for ensuring biomedical equipment is operational and properly maintained to support high-quality healthcare delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Asset Management
• Maintain updated records of all biomedical equipment, including condition and location
• Ensure all biomedical devices are functional and properly documented
• Organize installation, replacement, and user training for equipment
• Maintain and secure all equipment documentation
Maintenance
• Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance schedules
• Carry out maintenance and repairs according to MSF and manufacturer protocols
• Maintain accurate maintenance records
• Diagnose faults and propose solutions to the supervisor
Stock Management
• Manage spare parts and consumables to avoid stock shortages
• Coordinate with logistics and pharmacy teams to maintain adequate stock levels
Installation and Technical Support
• Ensure correct installation of biomedical equipment
• Test and validate equipment before use
• Ensure compliance with safety and electrical standards
Supervision and Tools Management
• Maintain and inventory tools and equipment
• Supervise daily workers when assigned
Qualifications and Skills
• Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
• At least 2 years’ experience in biomedical engineering
• Fluency in English and Chichewa
• Computer literacy in Word, Excel, and internet use
• Results and quality orientation
